Research and development · 2025 · Proposal · M.Phil, Digital Arts as Critical Spatial Practice
Aim. To propose a late-night space in Dublin that is calm, alcohol-free and not for profit, as a model for cultural life after midnight.
What was proposed. Seventy-two hours, Friday evening to Monday morning, in one central venue that works as a cafe, a listening room and a livestream hub: ambient music, talks, poetry, screenings and sound pieces, with no dance floor and no alcohol. Volunteer-led, with donations shown on a public live ledger and passed on to local charities. The proposal sets out team roles, safety and noise plans.
What we found. The proposal builds on the Electronic Cafe International (1984), Serpentine's Future Art Ecosystems, transparadiso's direct urbanism and Jane Rendell's critical spatial practice. It cites Dublin City Council's night-time survey from early 2025, in which 61% of respondents wanted more cafes open between midnight and 3am.
Status. Proposal, April 2025. Not staged.
